Vector
for piano or woodwind quintet
In physics, a vector is something that has magnitude and direction. In this work, I was interested in direction and energy, made apparent by the quick rhythms and sudden meter changes. The piano version of this piece was composed during the Thanksgiving holiday in 2017 and then orchestrated for woodwind quintet in early 2018.
The premiere of the piano version was given by Noah Chojnacki at Premieres and Debuts concert in February 2018 put on by the Foundation for Modern Music in Houston, Texas. An additional performance of the piano version was given at the composer's Master's Recital in March 2018. The premiere of the woodwind quintet version was also given at this recital featuring Alaina Diehl, flute, Andrew Glenn, oboe, Roberto de Guzman, clarinet, Sarah Yarbrough, horn, and Daniel Wolfe, bassoon. A subsequent performance of the quintet version was given by the New Music Ensemble at the University of Florida in December 2018.
