NeveroddoreveN (Never Odd or Even)
NeveroddoreveN
for String Quartet
This short work for string quartet was written with the idea of a chord that continues to sound throughout the piece in a palindromic way. Each return of the chord is separated by an increasing or decreasing number of beats. In other words the chord happens at the beginning of the piece, then again 1 beat later, then again 2 beats later, then again 3 beats later and so on. This continues up to 20 beats separation and then begins to work backwards--19, 18, etc. down to 0. The title of the piece "NeveroddoreveN" (Never Odd or Even) comes from the numeric nature of the work as well as the phrase being a palindrome itself.
NeveroddoreveN was premiered April 13, 2018 by the Apollo Chamber Players Spring 2016 as part of the Foundation for Modern Music series in Houston, Texas.
